Allow me to introduce myself! I'm Shelby, a senior social media marketing major at WKU. I recently joined Rivals to help with social media, as well as various other things. I was raised WKU red. My grandparents have taken me to every basketball game for as long as I can remember. Some people know me as the girl who wore a paper bag over her head during the Kmac days; others know me as the girl with the red snuggie. No matter if you know me or not, all you need to know is I'm very passionate about WKU. I miss the days as a young girl when I would go to the every game and see the loud student sections and a full arena. I long for Diddle Arena to be that way again, as I know many of you do too.
Which brings me to my first Rivals message board post, 5reasons why you should not miss the WKU vs. UTEP game on Thursday. I know
people reading these boards are people who are WKU supporters. You're going to be at the game regardless, but this week when you're talking to your friend, co-worker, brother's wives cousin's son and need a way to convince him to come to the game, here's some helpful hints.
1. The obvious: Courtney Lee's jersey retirement. Courtney Lee brought a lot of excitement to the hill in his 4 years here. He's currently
playing very well for the Memphis Grizzlies. For my generation, he's the guy everyone remembers. It wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when his jersey would be retired and I don't think it could of come at a better time. C-Lee should help bring some people to Diddle on Thursday.
2, WKU has started 5-0 in conference play for the first time since the 92-93. I wasn't even born till 1993, so that's been
awhile. If WKU wins Thursday, they'll start 6-0 in conference play for the first time since 69-70 season. These stats show that WKU is playing pretty good at the moment. Even some of WKU's best teams over the years haven't started 5-0 in conference. Who doesn't want to watch a winning team?
3. UTEP is a good team. All I've heard over my years, as a WKU fan is that no one wants to watch the SunBelt teams play. I
mean if I wasn't raised such a big WKU fan, I couldn't see myself getting excited for Louisana Monroe coming to town, let's be honest. Things have changed though. CUSA has some dang good basketball teams. UTEP is sitting at 4-1 in conference play, only loss to LA Tech (top team in the league). They have a history of being a good basketball team. WKU has a history of being a good basketball team. Watching these teams clash should be exciting. No more excuses about quality of opponents.
4.Something special is happening with this team. I've watched a lot of Hilltopper Basketball over the years. I've experienced the lows and the highs of being a WKU fan. I've seen a team go to the sweet 16 and I've watched a team through 2 holes cut in a paper bag. I just have a gut feeling with this team I haven't had in awhile. The guys seem to truly have a bond that wants everyone to succeed. It's not selfish basketball, but it's team basketball. They all believe in each other and know what they're capable of if they continue to do what they're doing.
5. These guys deserve the support. They work day in and day out to represent WKU and BG. If you were putting your blood, sweat,
tears, heart, and soul into something, you would want it to be noticed. The players and coaches talk about all the time how the crowd affects games. I've seen it happen so many times. If BG can get behind this team, the possibilities I believe are endless.
Bottom line: Let's all support this WKU team and watch would could be a magical season unfold. Not just against UTEP, but for the rest of the season and beyound. Go Tops.
