Just a few notes to pass along on the Western Kentucky front after the second week of live evaluations. I was down in Cartersville, Georgia last week for the UAA Finals where head coach Rick Stansbury and assistant coach Quannas White were both evaluating talent.
On Wednesday night, I noticed White watching the Louisville Magic 17U squad closely as they played Powerhouse Hoops. The Magic are loaded with in-state talent that is headlined by guards David Sloan, Tony Jackson, and Jaylen Sebree along with center and shot-blocking machine Chris Vogt. Sloan is obviously the top talent of the group and I'm sure the staff is making a push to hopefully steal him away from the perceived favorite in Louisville.
Stansbury made his appearance at the UAA Finals on Thursday, checking out four-star shooting guard target Josh Anderson of Louisiana Elite, Sloan, and Franklin-Simpson product Tavin Lovan who is back from injury playing for Team Thad.
Also, the staff made their way down the road in Atlanta to check on the highly-touted duo of 2018 forward Zion Williamson and 2017 shooting guard Nick Weatherspoon at the Adidas Gauntlet Finale.
Updates:
I chatted with Tavin Lovan and he told me that he took part in a team camp at WKU last month and was able to meet the entire staff. He had a lot of good things to say about the new staff and it feels like he'll be a priority going forward for the Hilltoppers. Lovan has spent most of the summer on the sideline due to injury and I also talked with his father and he said he's probably only playing at about 80% right now.
I also talked with Trace Young, who told me that he is looking to transfer back to a high school in Kentucky to finish out his high school career. He spent the past year at Huntington Prep after playing for Apollo the previous year. Young said he's hearing from the new WKU staff but currently listed VCU, Mississippi State, and Kansas State as the three teams sticking out to him. He really likes the Bulldogs because of Eli Young and Aric Holman, both close friends of his, are already down there.
