2023 offensive lineman Austin Anderson, an emerging senior and local talent at Bowling Green High School, picked up an offer from his hometown team as Western Kentucky extended an offer on Friday, June 3.
Anderson announced the offer from the Hilltoppers over social media on Friday afternoon.
The 6-foot-4, 295-pound offensive lineman spoke with InsideHilltopperSports.com about receiving an offer from his hometown team and talked about how significant this offer is to him at this point in his recruitment.
"It means a lot to get offered by a program I’ve been watching since I was a little boy," Anderson said. "I know quite a bit about the Hilltoppers and I have a lot of old teammates who play for them now."
Anderson said that Western Kentucky began to get involved with his recruitment this last spring and said he connected with the WKU director of player personnel John Kuceyeski during a practice. On Friday, Kuceyeski, student assistant Carter Webb and assistant coach, co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Zach Lankford talked with him.
"My recruitment there started this spring with me coming to a practice and having a great conversation with Coach Kuceyeski throughout practice, telling him how I play, just making a good connection in general. Today, I got to talk with Coach Lankford, Webb, and Kuceyeski."
Anderson said this offer from Western Kentucky is a huge offer to him seeing as its his hometown team and is his first Conference USA offer.
"This is pretty big," Anderson said. "It's my first C-USA offer and their old rival Marshall offered me, so I figured they would come soon enough."
Anderson said that growing up watching Western Kentucky, he really admired former quarterback Brandon Doughty and said he was one of the best quarterbacks he's ever seen play and said that his success came from the fact that there was a solid offensive line.
"Brandon Doughty was a big one for me," Anderson said. "He really was one of the best quarterbacks I’ve watched in person and I feel like that is special because it all starts with having a good offensive line."
Anderson said that he attended Western Kentucky's prospect camp last year and is attending Tennessee and Purdue's camps this summer. He additionally talked about his experience at Bowling Green High School and talked about a few players he's played with and against that ended up becoming Hilltoppers.
"Bowling Green is a special school," Anderson said. "I've had the luxury of having two really good offensive line coaches in Chris Seabolt who could've coached at Navy and Cy Williams who's been like a father figure to me. Both are really informed at the offensive line position. Javy Bunton, which I had the opportunity to block two years ago when we won state and Terrion "Tank" Thompson who I played behind my freshmen year when I played defensive lineman."
