Just a few quick observations to pass along from day one of Western Kentucky's fall camp...
- As expected on the first day, no pads or shells for the players and there was a little rust from the offense early on. All quarterbacks struggled with interceptions throughout practice, but seemed to tighten up there game toward the end of the day during 11-on-11 action.
- With the injury to Nelson Fishback, it appears that Mike White is in the driver's seat to be the starting quarterback in my opinion. Tyler Ferguson does posses what maybe the strongest arm I've seen in person, but lacks the consistency and game experience of White. I was impressed with Drew Eckels, who might have been the most consistent signal caller today.
- Sticking with the quarterback theme, freshman Steven Duncan looks like he is going to be a major player for the Hilltoppers in the future. He's got great size and throws the ball with a lot of velocity and does it with ease with his arm motion. He could develop into something special in a couple of years.
- Taywan Taylor was not at practice today due to a family emergency he had to tend to.
- I paid a lot of attention to the younger guys today. Tight end Kyle Fourtenbary might make the biggest impact of all the incoming freshmen. He moves really well, has good hands and size. With the tight end position being the most ravaged of talent from last season, he could very well move up the depth chart quickly with a good fall camp.
- I really like Xavier Lane's size and length. He has some long arms and is very athletic. Has the ability to develop into a really good player after a redshirt year where he can learn the playbook and continue to develop a stronger frame for college.
- I also came away impressed with Devon Key, a defensive back out of Bryan Station (Ky.). At 6-foot-1, he's lengthy, quick, and has good coverage skills. While I think he'll end up redshirting due to depth reason, I also wouldn't be surprised if he got some playing time this season as well.
