Hilltopper Hysteria thoughts and observations

I just wanted to give you guys and gals a few thoughts and observations from Hilltopper Hysteria last night:

  • This team is very athletic. Perhaps the most overall athletic team we have had on the hill since 2008 or 2009.
  • In keeping with the athleticism, every single player on this team has the ability to get up and finish strong at the rim.
  • There is a new addition to the roster in 6'1" R-Jr walk-on guard Jalen Baker out of Louisville.
  • Lamonte Bearden did not participate in the team scrimmage at hysteria because of an ankle sprain he suffered in practice. He was walking around fine. So it was more as a precaution.
  • All of the players look to be in excellent physical shape. Justin Johnson is back down closer to his basketball weight after putting on about 25 pounds for football.
  • Josh Anderson is going to be a special player before it is all said and done. He struggled a little with his jump shot. But his finishing ability around the basket was fantastic.
  • Darius Thompson is what Junior Lomamba should have been for WKU last season. While WKU will have an actual starting point guard in Lamonte Bearded. Thompson was very good at finding the open man on Friday night. His vision on the fast break was solid and he showed some very slick passes to set guys up for dunks.
  • Jake Ohmer belongs. People who may have wondered about the signing of the kid that had no division 1 scholarship offers but played solid in the kentucky high school state tournament. But Ohmer is sneaky athletic, has good hustle and poise, and a solid shooting stroke.
  • Marek Nelson is going to absolutely posterize and opposing team player at some point this season. The kid can absolutely get up with ease. He will be a good one before his time on the hill is done.
  • Dwight Coleby is one big dude. If he can stay healthy he will be a very nice addition to this roster
  • Very little defense was played in the scrimmage so it is hard to get any kind of full bearing on the team or players strengths and weaknesses.
  • Stansbury called for Diddle Arena to be sold out. Only about 800-900 tickets remain for the opening night game.

I hope we have some shooters. They definitely did a great job getting to the rim (although they weren't really trying to stop each other in that setting). I think with Bearden driving and dishing the ball out, it will be important for us to have some guys that can hit that mid range jump shot and 3's. Couldn't really tell much about our shooting ability at HH. When do they expect to hear something on the eligibility of Anderson and Diang (not sure of spelling)?
