With the Hilltoppers setting at 1-2 on the season after suffering back-to-back close losses on the road to Illinois and Middle Tennessee, the bye week is a welcomed sight for head coach Jeff Brohm as he looks for his team to rest, recover, and improve.

"We've got to use this off-week to get healthy, get a lot of our injured guys healthy and getting a lot of treatment and make sure our guys are getting ready for our next opponent. Secondly, we have to get better. There are numerous things we need to work on on both sides of the ball and special teams. We've got to use this week to improve on fundamentals, technique, and really push hard to get better."

While last Saturday's first Conference-USA contest was against a familiar, and bitter rival in Middle Tennessee. Brohm realizes strong competition is ahead in a brand new league.

"We took a lot of time in the summer to examine all the teams we're playing and I'm not gonna lie, we knew there are very good football teams and I think they've shown that the first three weeks. Very competitive from top to bottom. Even teams that you may not have thought normally win as much are playing very well, so it's gonna be tough competition. We're new to the league. We came from a league outside of here, so we're not too familiar with these teams. These teams have played tough competition every year. We've got to raise our level of play, we've got to raise our level of preparation, we have to find ways to compete and battle and win some of these games because I believe a lot of them will go down to the very end."

Up next is another tough non-conference road game against Navy on September 27th where the Western Kentucky defense will face another formidable backfield in the Midshipmen's triple-option attack.

"This upcoming week we're going to face something a little different, so I think we have a decent plan ready for that, one we used last year and adjusted a little bit. Just overall, I think we have to find ways to take away their best players and whether that's stopping the quarterback run or containing the back which we knew going into (the Middle Tennessee game) that's what we needed to do and we didn't get it done. I think in the second half we did a little better with that, but we can't have lapses."
