Former Bleckley County High School and Mercer longsnapper Zach Lassiter announced his transfer to Western Kentucky on Monday, May 30.
The longsnapper out of Cochran, GA. entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining and announced he was continuing his collegiate career with the Hilltoppers over social media on Monday afternoon.
Lassiter spoke with InsideHilltopperSports.com about his commitment to Western Kentucky and talked about why the Hilltoppers' program is one he's so eager to join.
"I’ve been in contact with the coaches there since the day I entered the portal," Lassiter said. "We hit it off fast and I ended up visiting about a month later. I loved the winning atmosphere that I felt when I stepped on campus and I felt that it was a good situation for my future."
Lassiter said that he was originally contacted by WKU quality control and special teams coach Matt Pulford, who connected him with assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Andy LaRussa. He said both coaches were extremely helpful and he enjoyed getting to know them.
"Coach Pulford was the one who originally contacted me," Lassiter said. "He put me in touch with Coach LaRussa. They were both super helpful and I was able to form a relationship with Coach LaRussa very quickly. They laid out the opportunity and were always up front and open with me."
Lassiter revealed that he took a visit to Western Kentucky on May 17 and said he was not only impressed by the beautiful campus and great facilities but he said the coaching staff also made the visit such a memorable one.
"I visited May 17 and I saw a beautiful campus, great facilities, and a place that felt like home," Lassiter said. "The coaches there are passionate about what they do and I saw how they will not only prepare me for my future in football, but in life as well."
Prior to entering the transfer portal, Lassiter was on the roster of Mercer where he developed as a player and picked up tons of experience. With Western Kentucky having such an outstanding season in 2021, Lassiter talked about his time at Mercer has helped him to develop and grow as a player and revealed how his experience will play a factor in repeating the success of last year's team.
"It’s helped me tremendously," Lassiter said. "I’ve played in the big-time games like Alabama, UNC, Army, etc. That experience has helped me grow my composure and my coaches at Mercer prepared me well for that. I’m a consistent snapper who allows the punt team an extra gunner down the field. I force fair catches and I am able to make tackles when needed."
