Every week I hit the road to watch as many high school games as possible. As part of a feature we are rolling out news, notes and observations and posting them on the board. Feel free to respond with questions in this thread.

One prospect that really impressed was Rivals100 QB Jake Fromm’s top wide receiver in the game, two-star Amari Colbert. Right now Colbert’s most notable offer to date is from Western Kentucky, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see that change as the year moves along. I think he could sneak into a Power Five conference, but right now the Hilltoppers are the team to beat for his services. Here’s some highlights/analysis from his performance.

Two-star Mary Persons offensive lineman Caleb Ethridge also had a pretty nice game on Thursday night. Ethridge already has several non-Power Five offers, including WKU, MTSU, Kent State and Marshall. While he wasn’t playing against any future Division 1 offensive linemen, he did play a big part on an offense that averaged 7.3 yards per carry on 42 attempts in the game.

One guy who really caught my eye on Mary Persons defense was defensive back/linebacker Jatorian Hansford. He played corner, safety and linebacker and was involved in the action regardless of where he lined up. He’s listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds and while I doubt he’s that tall, he still looks like he could be a Power Five guy at either strong safety or outside linebacker, depending on his development.

Two-star wide receiver Eli Watson also had a big game for Houston County, catching five passes for 73 yards. Watson told me after the game that Cincinnati continues to recruit him hard and the Bearcats have done a nice job identifying talent in Middle Georgia over the past few cycles. I personally think Watson might have a higher ceiling on defense and right now I think he’s a non-Power Five guy, whether it be on offense or defense. Here are some highlights from his performance.

Georgia quarterback commit and Rivals100 prospect Jake Fromm got off to a very good start to the season, throwing for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns in his team’s victory. Fromm is great at playing from the shotgun and getting the ball out early and while his decision-making is impressive, he did throw a few passes that might have been deflected or intercepted against a defense with more Division 1 prospects on the roster. Regardless, I expect Fromm to have another monster year. It will be interesting to see how he transitions to playing more under center in college. Here are some clips from his performance in the game.

Rivals100 defensive end Malik Herring had an up-and-down game and if I’m being honest I have to say I wasn’t thrilled with his performance. He finished the game with one sack (I had him with two in my statistics) but only one of them came when he was matched up head-to-head with 2018 Rivals250 offensive lineman Deontrey Hill. Herring, who also talked openly about playing against Georgia quarterback commit Jake Fromm, seemed to be treating him like a teammate in a scrimmage rather than an opponent in a game. I felt like Herring could have gotten to Fromm several more times than he did in terms of knockdowns on plays where he was close enough to make a hit. Herring finished the game with six total tackles. As far as his recruitment, many think it’s a Clemson/Georgia race and with the way he was loving up to Fromm during the game, I’m now pretty confident he ends up at Georgia.

Class of 2018 offensive lineman Deontrey Hill has a great night while battling against Rivals100 defensive end Malik Herring. Things got so bad for Herring that he switched positions on the defensive line to get away from Hill and the two got tangled up after several plays as the game went along. Hill projects as a true guard but plays left tackle for Houston County and is tasked with protecting Rivals100 Georgia commit Jake Fromm. I think Bulldogs fans should feel very comfortable with Hill in that position protecting their future quarterback. As far as his recruitment, Hill has plenty of options, with Georgia, Clemson, Auburn and Florida believed to be his early favorites. Hill still has a long way to go, but it’s hard to see him not being a Rivals250 guy for the duration of his time as a prospect. Here's a few clips of him in action along with some analysis.
