This is from last Friday's game. I'm still trying to catch up on my stuff heading into multiple games this weekend. I'll be happy to answer any questions you guys may have in this thread.
I went in excited to see Western Kentucky commit and South Forsyth quarterback Davis Shanley play and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed with his showing. We’ve seen guys like him go to non-Power Five programs and have a lot of success and make the rankings look bad in the process, but I’m not sure he’s one of those types, at least at this point. He finished 15-of-32 for 154 yards and also ran 12 times for 68 yards. Especially early on he seemed more fixated on running than passing and overall his performance was inconsistent. Here are some highlights from his performance.
I can say without much doubt that after watching Class of 2019 Hillgrove defensive back Jaylen McCollough play that he will be one of the top players in the state for his class and will likely be a high-level national recruit. McCollough already has offers from Tennessee and Missouri and I’m sure after some more sophomore film gets out he will keep adding offers. He’s listed at 6-foot, 180 pounds but I think he’s already bigger than that. He finished the game with four tackles and also had 20 yards rushing and a touchdown. He has a nose for the ball and isn’t afraid to hit and was also very good in coverage as well. I see him developing into a safety down the road. Here are his freshman season highlights, these are from varsity games.
Class of 2019 Hillgrove running back Trevor Smith also impressed me quite a bit. He played so well that McCollough wasn’t needed much on offense and Smith finished with 122 yards on just nine carries. He’s listed at 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds and as far as I know he doesn’t have much recruiting interest. That will likely change down the road.
Class of 2018 Hillgrove wide receiver Chigoziem Okonkwo has good size and looks like a guy to watch going forward. Right now he has a few FCS offers, which is odd for an underclassman, but I think he will end up being an FBS guy in the future. He had one catch in the game for 14 yards.
Another 2018 Hillgrove receiver I like is Jalen Jackson. Jackson is listed at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds and looks every bit of it. He caught one pass in the game for 16 yards but is a guy I will be keeping an eye on as the season wears along.
