A few quick hitters from Saturday's practice...
- It wasn't a stellar day for quarterback play all around as all struggled a bit with the occasional reads and interceptions. It'll be interesting to see if someone can start separating themselves from the pack next week before the Hilltoppers' first scrimmage next Saturday.
- In terms of injuries, head coach Jeff Brohm said they've been more nicked up this week than they have been in a while. One of the more significant injuries he mentioned was DeAndre Farris, who is dealing with a hamstring injury and could be out for a significant amount of time during fall camp with the hope of getting him back before the opener against Rice. He also noted Wake Forest TE graduate transfer Stevie Donatelli is out and is not sure when he'll be available this fall.
- The most notable player wearing an orange jersey today was tight end Shaq Johnson. However, he fully participated in the non-contact portions of practice and continues to impress. Brohm mentioned that Johnson is the number one guy at tight end and believes he can bring a lot to the position during the season.
- Taywan Taylor was on light duty today. No pads, but participated in individual wide receiver drills.
- Some of the younger receivers on the roster got a lot of work during the two-minute drill portion of practice. Xavier Lane really stands out among all the receivers on the roster. He is a physical specimen at 6-foot-4, 200-pounds. He made a couple of nice catches during that portion of practice and later on as well, also had a drop that I noticed as well.
- So far in the two practices I've seen, I'm really impressed with the defensive backs on the roster. There are a lot of younger playmakers that will complement Brandon Leston, Marcus Ward, and Joe Brown. Names like De'Andre Simmons, Leverick Johnson, and Juwan Gardner come to mind that stood out and made some plays on Saturday.
- I'll have an interview with local South Warren (Ky.) product Joel Iyiegbuniwe coming up on the site in a few minutes.
