BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- I was out at Houchens-Smith Stadium Friday afternoon for Western Kentucky's third practice of the spring season. It was a bit cool and windy day, but nothing's better than that sun shining on that new turf on Feix Field. Anyway, here's some notes from the evening:

-The Hilltoppers were in pads for the first time this spring. The team participated in hard-hitting drills and other drills in that category.

-Nelson Fishback, Mike White and Tyler Fergunson were the main three quarterbacks. From the time I arrived and left, White was getting the most reps. It kind of seems like each quarterback is doing more than the other each day.

-The new assistant coaches, as well as the rest of the coaching staff continued to be very in-tune and hard working with the players. The staffer that caught my eye all afternoon was new running backs coach Chris Barclay. He kept encouraging his players to attack.

-The defensive unit was pumped up all practice long. They were dialed in and working. Most of the squad was probably pretty pumped to be in pads for the first time. You could tell they were ready to attack at full force.

-Head coach Jeff Brohm worked with the quarterbacks most of the evening.

-The running backs competed in multiple drills, many more than all of the other positions (like I said, Barlcay is making those guys work). De'Andre Ferby and Ace Wales, WKU's main two runners last season were the top performers.

Western practices again Monday afternoon from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. at The Houch.
