The Hilltoppers opened their first day of spring practice on Tuesday evening with various drills, 7-on-7, and individual one-on-one competition. Here are a few notes from today's session.
- There was a lot of rust on both sides of the ball, which is to be expected with the first practice of the spring.
- The defense seemed to be ahead of the offense today with a lot of tipped passes and a few interceptions. A lot of that had to do with backups on offense getting some much needed reps from the starters. It always seems that early in the spring and fall, the defense is ahead of the offense, so it's nothing new there.
- Brandon Doughty was sharp, as usual, today. He did have a couple of ill-advised pass attempts, but overall it is what you would expect from the veteran.
- As far as the other quarterback play, Fishback was a little rusty overthrowing some receivers and Drew Eckels was very inconsistent with overthrows, underthrows, and interceptions. Eckels did make some really good throws in tight spaces, but it's clear that he's young and still has a lot to learn from the playbook.
- Taywan Taylor continues to look like the best deep-threat wide receiver, he had several touchdowns in 7-on-7 actions on over-the-top throws.
- Shaquille Johnson was all over the place today, working out at linebacker and getting reps at tight end and fullback. He is a versatile athlete that will see the field somehow, someway.
- Another tight end to keep an eye on for the future is redshirt freshman Nick True, made A LOT of great catches today in the middle of the field. It looks like he could be the next great tight end at WKU.
- Wonderful Terry was in mid-season, playmaking form making 5-6 pass break-ups on the day. Marcus Ward was another standout from the secondary on the day, showing off good awareness and instincts in breaking up a few deep pass attempts.
- UAB defensive lineman Jontavius Morris got some reps with the first team early on in practice, while T.J. McCollum was at practice as well, but didn't participate due to injury.
