Given the current landscape of college football and the changes that are inevitable as a result of the NCAA ruling on P-5 autonomy, would the Atlantic 10 or Missouri Valley Conference be better for Western than Conference USA in the long run? When you consider the high travel expenses that come with Conference USA membership and the effect the autonomy ruling will have on G-5 schools, perhaps a basketball conference would be a better fit for WKU. I really don't know if Conference USA would ever agree to pay stipends to its athletes considering so many of its members are already struggling financially, but even if it did I believe the Tops would maximize its potential much quicker in a basketball conference than in a geographically challenged conference such as Conference USA. That is not to say Western should drop football altogether but should put more emphasis on basketball and less on football or drop several other sports it currently has in the athletic department. If you aren't convinced the autonomy ruling will dramatically affect mid-majors, take a look at the link below.

Power 5 Autonomy Is Bad News for the MAC

Assuming the P-5 conferences eventually go to a schedule consisting of only P-5 opponents, how can the other Division I football-playing institutions remain financially solvent? Without the "money" games, I just don't see how most mid-majors will be able to continue to prosper financially and recruit against their top rivals.

Speaking of the P-5 conferences going to a P-5 exclusive schedule, I'm surprised that Kentucky's Mark Stoops favors it. I can understand Saban, Muschamp, and Miles favoring it but not Stoops. Below is a breakdown of the P-5 conferences and the coaches who favor a P-5 exclusive schedule.

"A relative majority of the Power Five conference coaches told ESPN that they favor a schedule consisting of only Power Five opponents.

Of the 65 Power Five coaches from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC and Notre Dame, 46 percent (30 coaches) favored playing exclusively Power Five opponents while 35 percent (23 coaches) were opposed. About 18.5 percent (12 coaches) were undecided.

The best high school players in the country have been going to LSU, Alabama, etc. Surprisingly enough, there are still NFL starters that did not go to the likes. There is a need for WKU and the football players on the team. I'm not in agreement with scrapping the football team.
