On the heels of the news that DeMarcus Smith was transferring from the program, Warner Christian (Fla) quarterback Drew Eckels announced on Twitter that he has officially committed to Western Kentucky late Saturday night.

He will be a late addition to the 2014 recruiting class.

Eckels originally committed to UAB back in July of 2013, but found his recruiting process in limbo after former Blazers head coach Garrett McGee stepped down to take a position on Bobby Petrino's staff at Louisville in early January.

When the staff change happened, it's as if the Blazers forgot about the 6-foot-4, 200-pound signal caller, who was left looking for a new school to call home after national signing day.

Enter Western Kentucky.

The Hilltoppers expressed interest in Eckels at the beginning of his senior year which included a trip to Bowling Green, "I visited, unofficially, I toured the school and all the coaches liked me, but nothing really became official."

However, interest in the once-committed prospect was renewed when offensive coordinator Tyson Helton was in Florida recruiting the Daytona area, "not too long ago, like two weeks, they (Helton) asked that day (for me) to throw after school," Eckels explained.

With that, an offer was made and a commitment to the Hilltoppers soon followed.

"I committed because I have always felt like this is the place for me, my girlfriend's family is all from there and it felt like it was meant to be and it was the right place at the right time!"

Eckels threw for 2,027 yards and 27 touchdowns during his senior season. Check him out in action at the highlight link below.
