As WKU head coach Ray Harper stepped off the podium just now, one thing is very clear...he really likes this year's team.
Here are a few notes from the presser:
Harper mentioned the key will be avoiding the injury bug that has plagued them the last two seasons and also playing together and as one. If those things come to fruition, it could be another successful season on the hardwood for Western Kentucky.
Harper also noted the improved leadership qualities of Chris Harrison-Docks, saying he's coming off his best practice yesterday and hitting 9-of-10 from the three-point line.
He also noted the improvement of T.J. Price and his ability to drive to the basket. It's something he expects more of the senior shooting guard considering his accuracy at the free-throw line.
He mentioned the other senior leader in George Fant, saying he needs to be a consistent 16-17 point, 7-8 rebound guy and set the tone for the team every night.
Harper also mentioned his delight in freshman power forward Justin Johnson, noting that he's not your typical freshman. He's expecting Johnson to be the spark guy much like O'Karo Akamune last season, but also have an expanded role as far as minutes.
He also noted that walk-on Rob Marberry could get some minutes on the court as well and adds a lot of positive dimensions to the forward position.
Harper also talked about the there is more depth on this team, especially on the perimeter, but not quite the depth yet to go a full 40-minutes of full-court press. But, this team will pick it's spots to press on defense.
