Well it's a win. After a ugly first half, the Tops put it together (somewhat) in the second half to seal the win. In the first half, I seriously thought about canceling my trip to Birmingham to see the CUSA tourney. For those of you who know me know that I'm about as optimistic as they come when it comes to the Tops. I try to see the best after every game despite whatever happened, but with how the first half was played I didn't want to waste my spring break watching that kind of basketball and a first round loss. Anyway, I guess the Tops wanted me and the mohawk/possibly snuggle there because they pulled out the win.
1. Avery Patterson. I think the last time he played significant minutes was during the Brescia/Alice Lloyd games. I was pleasantly surprised to see Avery get the play time tonight. He definitely took advantage of the opportunity. He played very poised for someone who hasn't had a lot of minutes. He had a great attitude and did some good things. He hit a pretty important 3 in the first half and hit two very crucial free throws at the end. At the end of the game when FAU had the chance to tie, Harper had Avery on #2 for FAU who played a fantastic game. That shows right there the trust Harper has in Avery. We talk a lot about DJ and Justin, but I hope we can continue to see Avery on the court the next 3 years for the Tops.
2. Justin Johnson played a really good game. He's had some good games and some ones where he has disappeared. I don't let that bother me too much because he's a freshman adjusting to the college game. But it's the end of the year and as they all say we can't consider them "freshman" anymore. The exciting thing is though is that they are freshman and we get them 3 more years. Justin's jumping ability continues to amaze me. He has a nose for rebounding the ball that I love. I just think the sky is the limit for him....if he can learn to hit free throws because once George is gone next year, Justin is going to get a lot of attention.
That's about all I have to say after tonight's win. Please come out and support these seniors on Saturday. TJ and George have given their all to the Hill the last 4 years and been through so much as a Toppers. From the 6 man game to the Ken McDonald drama to Harper Mania. Also they've have brought 2 conference championships home to BG. Trency joined us a couple years ago and has been a valuable asset to the Tops since the day he stepped on the court. His energy and passion has been a blast to watch. All 3 of these seniors deserves a huge crowd on Saturday. Let's Pack Diddle!
