American Pharoah set american horse racing history yesterday, by capturing the first Triple Crown in nearly 40 years. Many folks (myself included) didn't think this would ever happen in their lifetimes, yet, here we are talking about it, and I'm already wondering when we'll see our next Triple Crown winner.
And, in the spirit of racing's Triple Crown, lets talk about WKU's triple crown this year, and how under-the-radar it went.
The "big three," in college sports are, of course, football, basketball and baseball. The likelihood of a team winning a national title in all three of those are very, very slim. In fact, it's difficult to be proficient in two of these, let alone all three. There are few programs who are (and the Louisville is a great example of that here in Kentucky) built to make a run at such a feat, so the day we see that happen will certainly be a day to cherish.
So lets condense this a little bit. What if there were a program to win three conference titles? Well, no need to wonder. Now, I'm sure it's happened before, but I'm too lazy to look up all the instances, but what I do know is that WKU is in some elite company. Not only did the (Lady) Toppers claim the Conference USA volleyball, women's basketball and softball conference tourney titles, and not only that, but in the school's first year as a C-USA member.
We now have a vantage point and some bragging rights: "The last CUSA school to win three conference tourney titles in a year was WKU in 2015." It also happened to be the same year as the most recent (to this point, last) racing Triple Crown. Cool, right?
Do you think we'll see a Triple Crown - from any school, in any conference - in the future? If so, how soon?
