WKU Basketball first practice observations

Today marked the beginning of the fall basketball season on the hill as the Tops began their first practice of the year. Here are a few things I observed today:

-Justin Johnson will make an impact as a freshman. Dude has dropped 32 lbs since arriving on campus but gained muscle. His baby fat the people teased about is gone. His calves are as big as tree trunks and he scraps for everything. He makes good quick decisions with the ball and is aggressive on the block. His athleticism hasn't dropped at all despite the body transformation. He will contribute immediately if he continues progressing.

-Derrick Clayton is another newcomer that will probably see playing time early in the year. His defense is ahead of the curve for a freshman and he possesses good handles and a solid shooting touch. He has that CLee body type, but he has a ways to go to be included in that type of company.

-Big Ben Lawson is going to see an increase in minutes this season. The summer tour with the England national team appears to have given him a confidence boost. He is active on defense trying to block shots and will throw down the dunk anytime he gets the opportunity.

-All the returning guys looked focused, poised, and ready to take their games to the next level this season. Kaspar with his knock down shooting, TJ with is scoring, George will be George but with a renewed focus on rebounding, and Snipes looks to play multiple positions and space the floor as a stretch four on occasion, Trency with his athleticism and improved shooting, and CHD as the offensive orchestrator.

-Team spent time working on full court press defense. If the injury bug stays under control I expect WKU to try to press and run a little more this season.
