Sacramento City College transfer defensive end and defensive tackle Hosea Wheeler was offered by Western Kentucky on Thursday, June 16.
The 6-foot-4, 275-pound athlete out of Sacramento. CA. announced that he had received an offer from the Hilltoppers over social media on Thursday afternoon.
Wheeler spoke with InsideHilltopperSports.com about how it felt to receive an offer from Western Kentucky and revealed what he knows about the program at this point in his recruitment.
"It's definitely a blessing. I can see how hard work pays off, and when you just keep working hard, good things will come," Wheeler said. "I don't know a lot about WKU, but from what I heard from the coaches, I know the culture there is great and it certainly sounds like a winning program that can help me reach my top potential as an athlete and teammate."
Wheeler has been in communication with WKU assistant coach and defensive line coach Kenny Baker. He said that Coach Baker made him feel like family and showed him some great hospitality.
"I talked to Coach Baker and I enjoyed how he made me feel like family without even meeting me in real life," Wheeler said. "He showed me a lot of hospitality and I know he wants the best from me. The conversation went great honestly. We talked about strengths and weaknesses. Coach Baker is an honest and real guy."
Wheeler said he is very intrigued by the offer from the Hilltoppers and plans on visiting Western Kentucky soon. Although there's no official date yet, Wheeler said he leaves to come visit campus on the 20th of this month.
"I leave on the 20th, so that's coming up really soon," Wheeler said. "I'm definitely eager and ready to see how the program works and learn more about the culture."
Wheeler also talked about playing for Sacramento City College and revealed how playing for them has turned him into a promising transfer target. He said that his coaching staff have played a huge role in his development.
"Playing at Sacramento City has really helped me to develop my game to the next level with key reads, flow reads and knowing where or what play they're running out of the formation," Wheeler said. "Coach Herlihy developed me physically and mentally, and Coach Walker, my head coach, really helped me overall and polished me. He gave me all my weaknesses and gave me the keys to perfect them."
